The Council on Renal Nutrition is an affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation. Our geographic area includes the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, and Westchester County. This geographic area is unique because of the population density. This is evident by the number of people getting dialysis treatments and the number of centers.
Number of patients listed by county:
Bronx - 5,617
Brooklyn - 9,512
Manhattan - 5,113
Queens - 7,064
Richmond (Staten Island) - 1,418
Westchester County - 2,594
The large number of patients in this area means that there is a great need for renal dietitians. The mission of the CRN of Greater New York is to provide educational and networking opportunities to the dietitians that work with dialysis patients in the centers and hospitals in this community.
Number of Dialysis Centers:
Bronx - 15
Brooklyn - 27
Manhattan - 28
Queens - 18
Richmond (Staten Island) - 4
Westchester County - 10
This community is unique because it has several transplant centers within a relatively small geographic area. This is beneficial for patients because they have more choices and can shop around before deciding on a transplant program. They can be on several transplant lists at one time. In addition, New York has an Eye Bank program for sight restoration located in Manhattan. Rural areas usually do not have as many options.
Transplant Centers
Montefiore Medical Center - Bronx
Mount Sinai Medical Center - Manhattan
New York University Medical Center - Manhattan
New York Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia Campus and Cornell Campus - Manhattan
SUNY Health Science Center - Brooklyn
The National Kidney Foundation National Headquarters is located in Manhattan. The offices of the National Kidney Foundation of Greater New York is also in Manhattan. This enables our council to maintain close contact with key players in the renal world. We remain committed to improving the lives of patients by working with the National Kidney Foundation to promote their cause. By educating our members, we can make a difference in the challenges renal patients face each day of their lives.
We hope that the entire region can benefit from our work and that we will have a positive impact in New York City and Westchester.
